[Using Sakai] Proposed changes to Sitebrowser results page

We plan to make the following changes to the Sitebrowser Tool results page. Are there any objections?

We feel that the results page isn’t optimal.

Current page

Proposed New Page

Differences

1/ On current page, clicking on the site title brings up an “Information Page” which is not what you’d expect when clicking on the title of a site. Here’s the info page, note there’s no public information for this site:

The proposal is to move this functionality to the column marked 2 above: “Information about <site>”.

2/ Clicking on the site title in the proposed new page will actually take you to the site (or display a site unavailable if you don’t have permission).

3/ The name listed under the Owner column is currently the name of the person who created the site, it should be changed to the name given in the Site Contact box on the site. The rationale is that it is not at all useful to know who created the site.

Please let me know if any of the above 3 changes are troublesome.

Adam

Re: [Using Sakai] [Building Sakai] Proposed changes to Sitebrowser results page

Hi all,

I'd like to add documentation for site hierarchy configuration to the "Delegated Access tool" section of our community admin Help. Here's a google doc with a draft, accessible/editable by all:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TbmUDr7ajUa_cdIOUC_wStvMe_crVbpc5rLrrLv8u44/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks in advance to anyone who can vet this documentation for accuracy! Feel free to add/revise/remove as necessary--I only ask that you leave some indication (via comment) of your changes.

You'll see one query in the doc about automating the addition of property settings in sites. The DA tool confluence page (https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/DAC/Delegated+Access+Tool) says "This should be done during your site integration job or can be done with a daily script." I'm assuming "site integration" means SIS? Besides that approach, what other automation methods are possible, especially for instutions not using SIS?

Best,
Jim Mezzanotte

I thought I’d send this again as it generated very little response. I shall take a lack of objections to be an endorsement of the proposal.

I like your suggestions for giving access to “public” sites by clicking on the title (or presenting “site unavailable” if access permission is not granted to .anon in the affected site). This may solve some problems for people who want to direct others to their sites. Thanks for your efforts to make these changes!

One question: Will you also change the “Owner" column heading to “Site Contact" to make that association clearer?

Thanks,
Trisha

You are spot on about the title of the column being changed. I’ll note this in the Jira.

Re: [Using Sakai] [Building Sakai] Proposed changes to Sitebrowser results page

In reply to this post by Gordon, Patricia (psg3a)

I beg to differ.

On our ‘site unavailable’ page we outline the steps to follow to get access to the site. This helps the student when for some reason they don’t have access to a site that they should be a member of; sometimes our group providers get the list of participants wrong.

Would it be worthwhile building in some logic around the link? Presenting a link and then giving them an unavailable message could be avoided by testing if the given user has access to the given site first. I think that would be a good improvement.

cheers,

Steve
